Trill Farm Garden and Springtail Farm combined role offer for market garden work
Trill Farm Garden and Springtail Farm are both looking to hire a part time employee for the season. Since the two farms are only fifteen minutes apart, and we are good friends with each other, sharing ideas, info and resources, we are teaming up in the hiring process also, in the hope that we can combine two part time work offers, into one, thus offering a more appealing full time position, with the opportunity to work at two independent market gardens.
** Please read on for more info below, and let us know in your application if you would like to apply for the combined role, or if it will suit you better to work with either one of us separately.
Work offer
Trill Farm Garden Offer: We are looking for someone to join our team for three days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) from as early in April as possible, up until the end of October 2025. Mondays and Thursdays are harvest days (for deliveries on Tuesdays and Fridays), and Tuesdays include a bit of harvest, but mainly other tasks related to market gardening including planting, weed control, bed preparation and general crop care.
Springtail Farm Offer: We are looking for someone to join our small team in the market garden for two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from as early in April as possible through Mid/End of October 2025. Wednesdays and Fridays are our harvest and delivery days each week, so this position will be focused on harvesting, washing, and packing produce, but will also include all aspects of day-to-day market gardening, from seed sowing, bed preparation, planting, and weeding when time allows.
About Trill Farm Garden and Springtail Farm
Trill Farm Garden is a 5 acre market garden, with production predominantly in one 2.5 acre field, which includes about ¼ acre of polytunnels. We produce veg to sell through our own box scheme (around 90 deliveries a week), as well as to local cafes, restaurants and shops. We have been growing veg organically here for 15 years, and diversity is key to what we do. We grow around 3 tonnes of salad each year, but also grow a wide range of crops, as well as growing seed for 3 small seed companies. We are a team of 8 working in the market garden, and generally the work is with part of the team, but occasionally there are tasks that will be carried out on your own.
The work at Trill is varied, we work hard and the pace of work is often fast, but we also laugh lots and work really well together as a team. These are all attributes that we will be looking for in applicants.
Springtail Farm is a 1 acre or so, largely no-dig market garden on rented land at Fivepenny Farm in West Dorset. We are driven by a desire to produce high quality and healthy vegetables, in bountiful quantities for as many people as possible, whilst being considerate to the land that we tend, taking pride in what we do, and having plenty of fun whilst at it too. Our sales outlets include the Bridport market each Saturday, and several cafes, shops and restaurants as wholesale customers. We also grow and sell fresh cut flowers both as arranged bouquets for market and shop sales and as stems to local florists. Hard work, teamwork, fun, high energy, a passion for growing healthy vegetables, day to day efficiency across all aspects of the market garden, plus high quality and fast paced work are all objectives that we strive for in the market garden, and are all attributes that we will be looking for in job applicants.
What we're looking for in job applicants
For this position/s we are ideally looking for someone who has previously worked in vegetable production, though for the right candidate, this is not a strict requirement. Experience growing and arranging cut flowers would also be a bonus for the position at Springtail Farm, as cut flower production is an important aspect of the business, though again this is not a strict prerequisite. This combined role will include all aspects of day to day work in the market garden/s, from seed sowing, to bed prepping and transplanting, through to harvesting, washing and packing the veg. This is two part time roles, across two farms, that we have combined into one, for someone looking to get stuck into a season of fast paced vegetable growing, as part of two small and motivated teams. Since this is a 3 day seasonal role at Trill Farm Garden, and 2 days/week at Springtail Farm, it does not necessarily involve the same responsibility as a more permanent position in either market garden, though we would be especially keen to hire someone who is eager to engage as much as possible in the daily happenings of the market garden/s, who cares deeply about the work of growing food, and is eager to spend a season growing and learning along with us.
This job is for someone looking to:
● Contribute to and engage in the day to day running of a small scale vegetable growing business ● Take ownership and pride in their work ● Take day to day initiative in the market garden/s ● Make decisions on their own and as part of a team ● Work hard and at a good efficient pace ● Have fun ● Motivate themselves and others ● Work with a momentum and enthusiasm that encourages others to do the same ● Pay close attention to the daily details of growing a multitude of varying crops ● Feel excited about growing delicious high quality and healthy vegetables ● Learn ever more about soil and plant health ● Work in all weathers
